I'm out of the country until February, so until then someone else will be spinning tunes for the hour. For the 24th and 31st of December, Sudeep will be doing that. Thank you, Sudeep.
Here are some interesting things I found today:
- This document shows how Raymond Carver's story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" was edited by his editor Gordon Lish. His editing feels like filleting with a sashimi knife: very "in" and very tight. It makes the story feel more like a play than a narrative. Towards the end, he's cutting out pages and pages, and though I'm sorry to lose the lovely ending where Nick's staring out the window at the fields, I think it feels right to end where it does now. Plus, the back story about the Gates was way senti.
- Destination-out has a selection of "this year"'s "bests". Here you can even download a Bill Dixon tune called "Solo" from the same album (Considerations...) I played last week. Plus they included My Bloody Valentine's "You Made Me Realise," a song from which has one of my favorite lines: "You give me flowers when it's thorns I give to you."
See you February 4th.
